This is great. I use it in a college dorm whenever my roommate is sleeping. The light is concentrated enough as to not disturb him, but wide enough for me to clearly see my work. I also use it as a flashlight when I have to plug something in or dig through my backpack in the dark. It's an LED lamp so the light is great.
That being said, if you're looking for a full-on desk lamp, then get that. The base is a bit too light and small for that. But if you're looking for something I described above for a cheap price, then you can't beat this.
